Permits, Inspections & Code

Building safely in Jefferson County: how permitting works, how inspections are scheduled, and how code enforcement protects our neighborhoods.

How Permitting Works

Most projects in Jefferson County follow a two-step process: first obtain a Development Permit from the Planning Department, then apply for Building Permits through the Building Department.

  • Each department’s review may legally take up to 30 days, so allow up to 60 days total, though reviews are usually much faster.
  • Each time a revision is submitted, a new 30-day review period begins.
  • Applications must be complete when submitted; incomplete applications will not be processed.
  • Submittals must be made in person or by mail: electronic applications are not accepted.
  • Permit fees are payable by cash or check only, made out to Jefferson Co. B.O.C.C.

Inspections

  • Call (850) 342-0223 to request an inspection.
  • Emailed inspection requests are not accepted.

Code Enforcement

Compliance with county ordinances is the goal of Jefferson County Code Enforcement. Enforcement is by citizen request: a complaint must be filed before action can be taken, and under Florida law (Section 162.21, F.S.) anonymous complaints cannot be accepted: you must provide your name and address.
